Ghana’s rapid urbanisation and the intensifying impacts of climate change present significant challenges for its cities. The country’s infrastructure deficits, unplanned spatial expansion, and growing informal settlements are compounded by the vulnerability of low-income communities to extreme weather events. With the support of FCDO Ghana’s urban portfolio – the Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme (GCIP) is a critical initiative aimed at addressing these pressing issues and transforming Ghana’s cities into sustainable and resilient hubs. By investing in climate-resilient infrastructure early warning systems and promoting sustainable urban development, the program seeks to create inclusive, equitable, and resilient cities. GCIP is managed by PwC UK.
IPE Global and Tripple Line Consulting are instrumental in the development of a comprehensive framework for assessing multi-hazard risks in pilot cities of Northern Ghana. Our scope of work encompasses the development of a robust methodology for identifying potential hazards, collecting relevant datasets, and conducting climate risk analysis. We are creating a city-level dynamic climate risk dashboard using AI/predictive modelling to support decision-making that can mitigate climate risk. The assessment will be integrated into the Ghana Urban Risk Observatory. Additionally, we are developing a toolkit and providing training to build the capacity of local stakeholders on climate risk assessment and the effective utilization of the dashboard. Through these efforts, we aim to contribute significantly to the climate resilience of Northern Ghanaian cities by undertaking risk-informed decision-making.
