The Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) is envisioned as a much-required improvement to water resource management and conservation in India in a coherent and collaborative manner. The Index is a public platform that provides an annual snapshot of the water sector status and the water management performance of the different states and UTs in India.
NITI Aayog hired a third party to conduct an independent validation of states’ submission on select indicators identified in the water sector. The validation process led to the calculation of individual scores of the states according to predefined methodology, based on which rankings were assigned. The Index provided insights into selected states and UT’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas requiring more focused action and resources.
This coordinated exercise was led by the Water Resources Vertical within NITI Aayog and we reviewed and verified the data as an Independent Validation Agency (IVA). We reviewed the data (indicator-wise) entered for each state in the NITI Portal by validating it against the source data, published data, supporting documents shared by the state, and other sources in the public domain.
