Integrated Solid Waste Management Improvement Project (ISWMIP): Improving the services in selected municipalities of Bangladesh

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)

ISWMIP

Reforming Solid Waste Management (SWM) services in Bangladesh to overcome the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation and high economic growth.

The proposed investment project aims to improve Solid Waste Management (SWM) services in selected municipalities in Bangladesh. The initiative has been undertaken in the backdrop of rapid urbanisation and high economic growth that are posing immense challenges in waste management. Specifically, the investment project will:

(i) Improve public health and quality of life by reducing exposure to pollutants and diseases associated with solid waste

(ii) Strengthen the government’s capacity to plan and implement effective waste management services

(iii) Improve SWM practices in the country by encouraging waste minimisation, recycling, and segregation at the source

Expected Outcomes

  • USD 250 million+ investment over the next five years to improve urban waste management
  • 3200 tonnes/day of waste generation in 10 cities to be addressed
  • Transition to a new waste management approach – Regional integrated landfill & integrated resource recovery facility
