Innovative academic activities in schools of Meghalaya amid COVID-19

The unprecedented rise of the pandemic has resulted in the closure of educational institutions across the country. Education has changed drastically with the considerable advancement of e-learning or digital learning offering school children the much required digital exposure. IPE Global has been providing assistance to impact the education scenario in Meghalaya. The Government of Meghalaya (GoM) has also initiated online teaching-learning practices in collaboration with the Department of Education to mitigate the impact of the crisis in the education system of the state.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has introduced an ambitious online learning campaign ‘Bharat Padhe Online’ recently, and has received suggestions and feedback from various stakeholders including teachers’ associations explaining the problems and possibilities of online teaching and evaluation processes.

Schools in Meghalaya have adapted the following activities during the lockdown period to leverage the growth and development of students:

  • The Schools have started digital classroom by creating and using WhatsApp Groups as one of the teaching-learning processes.
  • Some teachers have created YouTube channels for imparting subject-specific online classes.
  • Some schools have also opted for distribution of printed learning materials especially for students residing in remote areas of the district with no access to mobile phones or internet.

E-Learning has its own sets of pros and cons as it requires a strong knack of self-discipline and self-learning. However, the teachers and students in Meghalaya are utilising this opportunity to learn and gain the technological exposure required. Online learning came as a panacea in the crisis and is increasingly seen as a new paradigm in education. Major world-changing events are often an articulation point for rapid innovation and it is quite likely that e-learning is going to outshine the education scenario and herald the arrival of a new normal.
