What’s expected of you?
As a leader of the research component, you would be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and executing qualitative research studies on maternal, infant and young child nutrition; effects of conditional cash transfers on improving maternal nutrition; and impacts of Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) interventions in improving birth outcome and childhood wasting. Research themes and topics are highly flexible, and you would use your innovations and freedom to conceptualize studies that falls within these domains, or other program components. Your essential and non-negotiable roles would include:
- Conceptualizing and writing research protocols for IRB/ ethics committee;
- Developing qualitative research tools and data collection guidelines for in-depth interviews; FGDs, ethnographic methods; and participant observations;
- Training of field researchers on qualitative data collection;
- Managing and supervising qualitative data collection effort in the field;
- Managing all qualitative data, coding, indexing, and sorting;
- Analysis of data using Atlas.Ti or nVivo; and
- Writing high-quality, publishable research reports. Ideally, the outcome should be in the form of a manuscript that can be published in a peer reviewed journal.
In addition, you may have to perform some specific responsibilities, such as:
- Working with development partners for executing research studies
- Providing feedback to the program team based on research findings.
- Sharing research insights and results with donors and team members in a timely fashion.
- Mentoring and training various cadres of staff on aspects of qualitative research.
- And other responsibilities as assigned.
What we are looking for in you?
You should ideally be a PhD in any social science/ humanities discipline. Even without a PhD you are welcome, but we expect that you have significant experience in research and have received training in qualitative research methods. You should have a minimum of five years post-PhD professional experience (eight years if you don’t have a PhD).
A substantial part of your career must be in the field of research. You should bring in proven practical experience with a wide array of qualitative research solutions, including conceptualising studies for concurrent assessments of services delivery, community level KAP and perceptions mapping, community level service delivery impact, and qualitative assessment of community mobilization efforts, etc.
In addition, you should have expertise in designing in-depth interview guidelines, researcher’s guide for FGDs, ethnographic methods, participatory mapping exercise, and participant observation. You should bring in excellent skills in training for developing skills of your team members on qualitative research; excellent written and oral communication skills; and skills in data coding and analysis using Atlas.Ti or nVivo. Experience of peer-reviewed publication in authored projects is a plus for you.
